Attention Lateral Recruits:

Effective July 1, 2025, the Georgia Department of Public Safety Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD) has officially become Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE). Along with this transition, the curriculum and name of our advanced academy has also been updated from Motor Carrier Officer (MCO) School to Commercial Vehicle Officer (CVO) School. The new curriculum consists of seven (7) weeks of advanced training, followed by 12 weeks of field training. This change marks a reduction from the previous 12-week curriculum, streamlining our training while maintaining high standards of preparation.

Lateral recruits who successfully complete the hiring process are required to complete the 7-week CVO School.

Lateral Recruits eligible for Commercial Vehicle Officer 1 (CVO1) must meet one of the following requirements:
  1. Be a certified peace (police) officer by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.); or
  2. Have been notified by P.O.S.T. that an Equivalency of Training (EOT) application has been approved prior to being hired by the DPS.
Types of officers who may be eligible for the EOT process:
  1. Eligible Federal Peace Officers who have graduated from the FLETC Uniformed Police Training Program.
  2. United States Military Police Officers (Army, Air Force, and Marines)
  3. Graduated from their branches’ Basic Military Police Course and possess a general discharge under honorable conditions.
  4. Out-of-State Police Officers who have graduated from their state’s Uniform Police Academy and their certification is valid and in good standing.
  5. Pre-Service Candidates and Inactive Registered Georgia Peace Officers actively employed in law enforcement or who have graduated from a basic law enforcement training course.
  6. Certification as a police officer in another state or with the federal government must be valid and in good standing.
  7. For EOT applicants whose EOT application is approved, the EOT Training requirements will be met prior to CVE School.
  8. For questions regarding the EOT process, contact SFC Dustin Rozier (404-387-3413).
As a Georgia POST certified peace officer, please carefully read the following:

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) is unable to reimburse other law enforcement agencies in Georgia for training expenses as defined by § 35-8-22. Therefore, DPS has determined that any currently certified peace officer in Georgia, as defined by § 35-8-2, will not be hired by DPS until at least 24 months after the completion of basic mandate training.

Important Note: This does not apply to candidates who paid for their own mandate training (pre-service candidates) or who are currently certified in another state. We strongly encourage those who do not meet this requirement to re-apply once 24 months has passed from the date of your mandate training completion to the announced start date of a future CVE School.
